HR consulting session for a small business

Growing your business? Your guide on a people centric approach

Are you a business owner/founder looking to scale your business and wondering what you need to do from a people perspective?

Here’s where you may want to start:

šŸ”’ Strategy – you need to have a clear strategy about where you want to be in 12 months time. Begin with the end in mind, it’s June 2026 what does your business look like? What are your financial objectives? Who is your customer base? What markets are you supporting? etc. Once you have clarity around this, you should then look at what each department needs to be doing to support these objectives. Here you may identify skills gaps that need to be addressed.

šŸ”’ Communication mechanisms – when your business is smaller, communication is easier. As you grow you need to have clear mechanisms in place to support communication across the business. Set this up early and refine as needed.

šŸ”’ Leadership development – invest in your leaders to equip them with the skills, knowledge and resources to support their leadership. Don’t underestimate the value of this. A great leader can be the make or break of a department reaching it’s operational goals. Great leaders inspire, engage and support their team in reaching high performance objectives.

šŸ”’ Org structure – look at your org structure, does it support your growth objectives?

šŸ”’ Engagement – don’t let your growth agenda distract you from the importance of an engaged team. An engaged team will support a growth agenda and be more adaptable to change. Empower your leaders to drive this (see point 3).

šŸ”’ Attract and retain – as you grow your talent needs will change. Don’t be afraid to use consultants to support through this period and upskill your team. Be clear about what your business offers potential employees (in HR speak, what is your employee value proposition).

šŸ”’ Have clear values that underpin everything you do. Demonstrate these top down and hold everyone to account. Don’t prioritise talent over values, it might work short term, but long term it will have a significant negative impact on your org culture. The right people for your business are those that are aligned with both the values and skillset
